Our Vision
to “Help The Marches Work” by encouraging and supporting providers to operate in a culture of collaborative working that facilitates achievement of learners whilst supporting employers in achieving their economic goals.
Our Mission
to “Provide effective strategic and operational support to members, enabling national priorities to be delivered locally for the benefit of the wider community”.
We aim to provide a network that will promote the awareness and uptake of work based skills and training across the Marches which contributes to the economic stability and prosperity of the region. In achieving this aim, our objectives are to:
Represent and champion Work Based Learning and Skills as a fully inclusive network.
Promote opportunities for the development of workplace skills to all stakeholders including: employers; individuals; schools; parents; local authorities and government bodies.
Inform and update its members of current issues surrounding work based learning on a regular basis.
Deliver the Marches Skills Agenda working in conjunction with key stakeholders for the achievement of Government targets and priorities.
Collaborate with key institutions and organisations within the Marches to share good practice and tender for joint funding opportunities.
Organisation
Board of Directors

The network is governed by a board of provider members.

The MSPN Board of Directors meets regularly to ensure progress towards aims and objectives is maintained. Operational plans are reviewed by the board at regular meetings.

Colin Thaw
Chair
Managing Director of SBC Training. MSPN board member since January 2015. His role is to support both area Chairs & to guide the board in meeting the needs of its members and its wider stakeholder group.
Nigel Morgan
Chair, Herefordshire
Chief Executive of HWGTA since 2019. He began his career as an engineering apprentice and then went on to spend 20 years in various positions before moving into the training sector.
Jane Preston
Founder of Riverside Training, Jane has been involved in training locally since 1994 and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the board from a local and national perspective.
Deva Odedra
Finance Director
A board member for 3 training providers. Also supports Training Providers as an external challenge and support consultant overseeing strategic growth ambitions & due diligence, governance & safeguarding.
Clair Schafer
Founder of SBC Training, and founding director of MSPN. Representing MSPN on the Marches Skills Advisory Panel and the European Structural Investment Funds Sub-Committee.
Jonathon Gill
Assistant Principal at Herefordshire, Ludlow & North Shropshire College, a role which includes Head of Apprenticeships and Director of County Training. He has been an MSPN Board Member since 2015.
Corinne Brown
Chair, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin
The Business Development Manager at Shrewsbury Colleges Group, specialising in construction and advising levy paying organisations. She joined the board in 2016 and has chaired the North region since 2018.

Strategic meetings
Operational meetings

Members are invited to attend MSPN meetings on-line at the moment. All meetings offer an opportunity to network and hear current industry relevant issues and opportunities presented by a range of members and invited guests. Meetings are offered at both strategic and operational levels, offering providers the choice of who represents them according to the different agendas.

Strategic meetings

  • for the whole network
  • held twice annually in Ludlow
    • January (for the General Meeting); and
    • July

Operational meetings

  • focus on county–related matters and marketing activity.
  • split into the north and south regions:
    • North region held in Shrewsbury or Telford
    • South region held in Hereford
  • held in March, May, September and November.
